Project Description: 200 Years Later...
On the occasion of the internationally commemorated memorial marking the bicentenary of the end of the transatlantic slave trade, AfricAvenir International e.V. and the Werkstatt der Kulturen are pleased to invite you to an interdisciplinary schedule of commemorative events entitled “200 Years Later.”
From November 23-30, 2008, we will honor the men and women who had the courage and strength to resist and fight one of the greatest crimes against humanity. At the center of focus of our one-week commemoration will be an exhibition, conceptualized and constructed specifically for this bicentenary event, that portrays the main actors within the African resistance movement.
In addition, there will be lectures, workshops, performances and films focusing on the political, cultural and economic situation in Africa before the European seizure of land, as well as the various resistance strategies against the deportation developed by the affected people on the African continent and in the Americas, which are still experienced today as candomble, capoeira, blues, jazz and calypso.
