Formal requirements

  •  Internships or voluntary services should last at least three month
  • Previous experiences in African or "Third World" countries are helpful
  • French is lingua franca in Douala and most other parts of Cameroon, therefore good french skills are necessary for working in Douala.
  • It is requested that you inform yourself prior to your application about AfricAvenir, its philosophy, aims and work. To this end, this website offers a good selection of texts and articles. The section "Internships/Preparation" is useful as a starting point, as well as the books by Kum'a Ndumbe III., published by Exchange & Dialogue.
  • Personal motivation and the willingness to experience north-south relations and the so-called "development cooperation" from an African perspective are important, particularly regarding the challenges and unusual circumstances you might face during your stay and work.
  • Write a personal report about your experiences after your return.

First Step: Application Form
Please download the |+| application form, fill it out and return it to AfricAvenir by email, fax or mail services.

We are especially interested in your motivation to work for AfricAvenir. Why did you choose us? What do you expect? And in which project would you like to participate? We also need to know about your previous working experiences, the focus of your studies, your language skills, your technical skills, the exact period you plan to stay, etc.

Please do not forget to tell us about skills or experiences not listed in the form.

Second Step: Interview
In a second step, you will be invited for an interview. In our application process, we also need to consider the project priorities and needs of AfricAvenir at the time of your application. A personal interview is absolutely necessary in order to better judge applicants and find out if the internship can be beneficiary to both parties. The interview can also be done on the phone.

Financial aspects
AfricAvenir does not pay internships or voluntary services. Moreover, you will need to bear all living costs yourself. Living costs in Cameroon almost reach european levels.

Experience shows that you will need about 500 Euro a month to pay your host family for a private room and all meals, as well as sufficient pocket money to cover your additional needs, transportation costs, social life etc. Part of this amount is meant to support AfricAvenir's additional work and running costs.

We are perfectly aware that this means a lot of money to many. We therefore encourage you to apply for scholarships, such as the DAAD in Germany or similar institutions in other countries. There is also the possibility of creating a network of friends and relatives who might be able to support your stay in Douala by a monthly sum that adds up. In return, you will let them participate in your experiences by regularly writing personal newsletters and invite them for a picture presentation after your return...
