Performance Poetry Workshop with Mak Manaka, 13 July 2012, 9.30 a.m., Humboldt-University, Invalidenstr. 118, r. 410, 4th floor

Poetry 101 is a platform where candid voices can be cultivated, an entertaining poetry workshop, and performance, hosted by the legend of the open mic, a well known poet from Soweto, Mak Manaka. A platform where not only does poetry articulate society’s conditions, it also suggests change, transforming society through art.

“Making art is more important than the finished product. Making art is some form of a ritual. A spiritual obsession that becomes some kind of a religion. Since art is an integral part of a people’s culture, it bears witness to a people’s myths and beliefs. It is through art, that we can begin the struggle for social reconstruction. Our quest for freedom is not only the gaining of political power but also economic power and then social reconstruction. Our art should therefore serve the social, educational, religious, political and economic needs of our people”-Matsemela Manaka

And so on the 13th of July, Soweto’s finest will be hosting a performance poetry workshop and perform his works at the Humboldt-Universität Berlin from 9:30 to 11:45. Invalidenstr. 118, r. 410, 4th floor.

Mak Manaka will host a workshop on poetry and be looking at the person behind the poems, and after the workshop he will perform.
