Message by Prince Kum'a Ndumbe III on the Occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the German Section of AfricAvenir in Berlin

On 26 August 2010 the German Section of AfricAvenir International commemorated its 10th anniversary by hosting a reception at Galerie Listros in Berlin. 150 guests witnessed various performances and interventions by friends and partners of AfricAvenir. The founder of AfricAvenir, Prince Kum'a Ndumbe III, sent a video message which was also screened in celebration of this 10th anniversary.

Ein Teil der kolonialen Ausbeutung war auch der Raub von Kunst- und Kulturgegenständen. Bis heute werden solche Beutestücke teils unkommentiert in Museen ausgestellt. In München steht der Tangue, eine Königsinsignie. Ein Beitrag über den kolonialen Raub von Kulturgütern und den Kampf um Rückgabe. Prinz Kum'a Ndumbe III. ist Universitätsprofessor, Schriftsteller und Gründer von Africavenir. Das Interview mit ihm führte Judith Strom. Christian Kopp ist Mitglied von Berlin postkolonial und war Mitveranstalter der letztjährigen Kampagne 125 Jahre Berliner Afrika-Konferenz. Prinz Kum’a Ndumbe III. zieht eine ambivalente Bilanz der sogenannten afrikanischen Unabhängigkeiten

Judith Strohm (AfricAvenir International e.V.) im Gespräch mit Prinz Kum’a Ndumbe III., Wissenschaftler, Autor und Leiter der Stiftung AfricAvenir in Douala/ Kamerun. Prinz Kum’a Ndumbe III. analysiert die Relevanz des kolonialen Erbes für das heutige Afrika in Politik, Wirtschaft und Kultur. Der zeitgeschichtliche Rahmen umfasst die Afrikapolitik des Deutschen Reiches bis hin zur Gegenwart. Der Verbleib des Tangué, einer Königsinsignie der kamerunischen Belé Belé, in München ist ein aktuelles Beispiel für die Gegenwärtigkeit des Kolonialismus. Im Gespräch gewährt Prinz Kum’a Ndumbe III. einen sehr persönlichen Einblick in seine Erlebnisse während der Zeit der kamerunischen Unabhängigkeit Anfang 1960 und zieht eine ambivalente Bilanz der sogenannten afrikanischen Unabhängigkeiten, für deren tatsächliche Realisierung Afrika noch immer auf allen Ebenen kämpfen muss. Thabo Thindi of AfricAvenir talks to Akeem Lasisi on Poetry and Nigerian Cultural Politics (Hausradio)

Akeem Lasisi, poet, journalist and winner of the ANA / Cadbury Award for Poetry has studied literature in Lagos and is now working as correspondent for the art section of the newspaper THE PUNCH, Nigeria's most read newspaper. His literary work includes tributes to the late author and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa (Iremoje: Ritual Poetry for Ken Saro-Wiwa, 2000), innovative interpretations of Yoruba oral poetry and wedding poetry (Ekun Iyawo: The Bride’s Chant, 2001), as well as poetry collections (Post Mortem, 1999, Eleleture, 2009).

AfricAvenir in cooperation with House of World Cultures has been hosting the Germany Premiere of Award-Winning Kenyan Artist-Activist Shailja Patel's spoken word performance "Poetry, Performance and Resistance. In the interview, Shailja is giving an insight into her art, her motivation, but above all her political work and the initiative Kenyans for Peace., Truth and Justice, which she has been co-founding. Shailja Patel brings audiences to their feet from Cape Town to Nairobi to Vienna. Her Spoken Word Performances are an anthemic call for a new generation of Africans to reconnect gut to heart to voice. To challenge icons and claim our own power. A founding member of Kenyans For Peace, Truth and Justice, Patel created a groundbreaking program to train grassroots Kenyan activists in political advocacy. She received a prolonged standing ovation at the 2007 World Social Forum in Nairobi and recently edited a special issue of Pambazuka News on the Kenyan Crisis.
