Inspiring Young Imaginations: ‘The Wooden Hand (Peau de Colle)’

AfricAvenir is very proud to screen the award-winning short film The Wooden Hand (Peau de Colle) by Kaouther Ben Hania this month within our children’s programme.

Five year old Amira does not understand the verses her Koranic school teacher is expecting her to learn by heart. As her mind wanders one day, Amira is asked to recite what has just been taught. Caught out, she wets herself. When her fellow pupils accuse her of being a ‘pisshead’, her humiliation is complete. From then on she does everything she can to avoid going to school to face her teacher and peers, starting with gluing her hand to the living-room armchair.

About Director:
Kaouther Ben Hania was born in Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia. She is a director and Screenwriter based in Paris. She studied Cinema in EDAC (Tunisia) in 2002 then documentary classes in Fémis Summer University (Paris) in 2004. She directed several short films including Me, My Sister, and the Thing (2006) and a documentary Imams Go to School which premiered at IDFA 2010 and was selected at many other prestigious festivals including Vancouver, Dubai and Amiens.

Awards: The Audience Award at Leiden International Short Film Experience (Netherlands)
