Sofia, a young student in Maputo, wants to become a doctor. Not only the missing support from her family and friends also society puts obstacles in her way to attend medical school. Sofia’s will as well as her moral concept are put to the proof again and again. A weak moment or a bad decision can cost her the university place.n
The film is the third feature-length production<\/b> in the history of the Mozambican cinema! n
A public discussion with the director Jo\u00e3o Luis Sol de Carvalho<\/b> will take place after the screening of the film.<\/p>\n
The event is organized in cooperation with the Festival Berlinda and the kind support of Evangelischer Entwicklungsdienstes (EED) and BMZ.

Synopsis<\/b>n
Sofia has a dream: she wants to become a doctor in order to help people in Mozambique and to fight diseases like HIV\/AIDS and malaria. But being a young woman she faces many barriers in society. Sofia’s family depends on the earnings the women get in the quarry and the father gains in the mine. Although her mother is paying the school fees, her family doesn’t support Sofia’s wish to achieve higher education. Also her boyfriend is not understanding at all. He dreams of a career as a football player in Portugal and therefore doesn’t recognise the necessity of his future wife to go through a lengthy medical school training.<\/p>\n
A crucial moment of the film is the sexual harassment and blackmailing of Sofia by her biology teacher, who initially supported her. If she refuses him, she won’t get the grades that she needs to enter university. On the one hand, the powerlessness of many women is portrayed clearly in the film. On the other hand, Carvalho is drawing images of strong and independent women, like a friend of Sofia, who is also a doctor and supports her in achieving her goal.<\/p>\n
Carvalho shows with his expressive film that gender equality is stipulated in the Mozambican educational system formally in contrast to the social reality where the emancipation of women is often times not accepted.
The title \u201eO jardim do outro homen\u201c refers to a Mozambican expression which says that one looks after the garden of another person if you allow your daughter a higher education. It is a film about gender role models in society and in families in particular – a film about dreams, aims in life, persistence, guilt, contradictions and the power of will. Up to which point a woman can hold on her believes and convictions that are in opposition to the hardened structures of society? The inner conflicts of Mozambican women between convention and emancipation find a strong image in \u201eO jardim do outro homen\u201c. <\/p>\n

The director<\/b>n
Jo\u00e3o Luis Sol de Carvalho was born in 1953 in Beira, Mozambique, studied at the Conservat\u00f3rio Nacional de Cinema in Lissabon and worked as a journalist, editor and photographer. Already during his studies in Portugal Sol de Carvalho was a political activist against the Salazar regime. On his return to Mozambique he joined the independence efforts of the FRELIMO and was nominated as the director of the Servi\u00e7o Nacional da R\u00e1dio Mo\u00e7ambique. Starting from 1979 he worked together with Mia Couto and Albino Magaia for the magazine Tempo. In 1984 he was involved as an assistant in the first feature-length production in the history of Mozambique, a co-production with the former Jugoslavia. This was followed by 56 editions of Kuxakanema, a documentary initiated by president Samora Machel in order to promote the national film industry. In 1986 Sol de Carvalho finally took the decision to become a film-maker. Since then he made more than 20 films, for the most part documentaries and TV movies (A Janela, O B\u00fazio, As Teias da Aranha, etc.), "O Jardim do Outro Homem" is his first feature-length film. Sol de Carvalho was also a founding member of the production company \u00c9bano, together with Pedro Pimenta and Lic\u00ednio Azevedo, though withdrew from it in order to establish Promarte Production Company in Maputo. His work is socially committed and often deals with taboo subjects like HIV\/Aids or domestic violence. Being a strong advocate for participatory processes, he is often times on the road in Mozambique to show his films in villages and to discuss with the people.<\/p>\n
