In the framework of the project "Paradoxes of sustainability"<\/b> the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC)<\/b>, in cooperation with AfricAveni<\/b>r and the German Development Institute<\/b> \/ Deutsches Institut f\u00fcr Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) invites you to a roundtable discussion on "Renewable Energies \u2013 new prospects or risks of conflicts?" <\/b>(in English) on Monday, 22 April 2013<\/b>. nThe Energy Transition<\/b> in Germany (\u201cEnergiewende\u201d) and the promotion of renewable energies<\/b> in Europe more generally imply the use of (additional) material resources<\/b>. For instance, the production of solar panels is based on copper, bauxite, zinc, lithium, rare earth metals and other minerals. Increasingly, these minerals are extracted from the earth outside of Europe<\/b> \u2013 in Asia, Africa<\/b> and Latin America. The production of biofuels is associated with enormous land investments to grow wood or crops. One of the concerned \u201cdeveloping countries\u201d is Liberia<\/b>, from where Vattenfall<\/b> imported 100,000 tons of Liberian wood<\/b> for electricity and heat production in 2011 and stopped importation in 2012 only for economic reasons.nThis roundtable will discuss the consequences of the energy transition in Europe for the African continent<\/b>. Who is affected by the demand for raw materials meant for renewable energy production in the sourcing countries? What are the wider social, ecological and economic ramifications? Does the energy transition give rise to new conflicts in the producing areas? Who should bear responsibilities?nThe roundtable is organized in the framework of the project \u201eParadoxes of Sustainability\u2014how socially responsible are green technologies?<\/b>\u201d, initiated by AfricAvenir International e.V<\/b>.. African experts<\/b> were invited to Germany in 2012 to discuss the ramifications of the Energy Transition in Germany on their continent and contributed to a policy paper by AfricAvenir<\/b>. The three panelists will comment on the recommendations about what is needed to make Europe\u2019s energy transition fair for Africa<\/b>: nSilas Kpanan\u2019Ayoung Siakor<\/b>nThe Liberian social justice and environmental activist and winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize for outstanding environmental achievements in Africa (2006), will discuss the case of logging in Liberia for \u201cgreen\u201d energy production in Germany. nMichael Br\u00fcntrup (DIE) <\/b>nMr. Br\u00fcntrup will present \u201cThe socio-economic consequences of large-scale land acquisitions for bio fuels\u201d in Africa and discuss challenges for and (im)possibilities of local, national and international regulation. nMarie M\u00fcller (BICC) <\/b>nMrs. M\u00fcller will provide us a broader picture about \u201cDimensions of conflicts surrounding mineral resources for renewable energies\u201d.
