A special kind of protest is taking place in France: Oulimata, Mariam, Géraldine and Fatoumata are some of the "chambermaids", who have decided to organise a strike for one month against low wages, inhumane working hours and social contempt. „On a grèvé“ is a snap-shot of one of the decisive moments of their movement, their strike in front of Hotel Campanile in Suresnes 2012.
Over a period of 28 days, "cinéma direct" director Denis Gheerbrant has shared the piece of sidewalk in front of the hotel entrance with them and has documented their campaign. He filmed them while discussing protest strategies, but also when mobilising people through singing and dancing - and, first and foremost, he let's them speak! „On a Grèvé“ is a film about the power of a movement of social "invisibles", who conquer the public space in order to - at least for a brief moment - gain a face and a political voice.

Denis Gheerbrant
Denis Gheerbrant ist ein renommierter französischer Regisseur und Fotograph. Er wurde 1948 in Paris geboren. Nach einem Studium der Literaturwissenschaften studierte er Regie und Bildaufnahme am Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques (heute FEMIS) in Paris. Seit 1972 ist er als Filmschaffender in der dokumentarischen Tradition des „Cinéma direct“ tätig. Besonders bekannt wurde Gheerbrant für seine scharfe Beobachtungsgabe und seine gesellschaftskritischen Dokumentarfilme, allen voran „Et la vie, la vie est immense et pleine de dangers“ und „La république Marseille“, die durch ihre Herangehensweise und Ästhetik das Dokumentar-Filmgenre beeinflusst haben. 1992 war er außerdem Mitbegründer der Vereinigung der Dokumentarfilmer (Association des cinéastes documentaristes, ADDOC) und lehrt heute zeitweise an der FEMIS.
