The film is an extraordinary and moving portrait of Mariètou Mbaye Biléoma alias “Ken Bugul” (the Unwanted), one of the most outstanding West-African writers of the last decades.
Born into the colony of Senegal in 1947, she is the first girl in here family to visit school and continues to university in Europe. There she discovers new ideologies and ideas of liberty, modern art, drugs, alcohol, lives through solitude and disdain and gets to know prostitution as a consequence of lacking affection. At 30 she returns to Senegal as a destroyed woman. Rejected from family and society as crazy, she starts writing her first novel “Le Baobab Fou (1982)”; translated into English as The Abandoned Baobab: The Autobiography of a Senegalese Woman (1991). It will be an international bestseller. For more than 30 years Ken Bugul has been composing with her novels an image of her life as a woman. Meanwhile she intertwines her love stories with analyses of the social and political relations in between her continent and the West.
In her first film as director, Silvia Voser shows with a lot of sensibility this mystic and moved life. A courageous but vulnerable Ken Bugul voices her story and through her artistic work the audience gets a totally new perspective on our world. An outstanding debut.
