Ghanaian-Canadian singer-songwriter Kae Sun has just announced Oceans Apart, a multimedia release crafted during stints across Toronto, New York, Germany and Côte d’Ivoire. The new 4-song EP will be released November 20 (via Urbnet) and will be accompanied by a short film and installation from art director Emeka Alams (of Gold Coast Trading Co.) and German filmmaker Simon Rittmeier. The emotive and haunting lead track “Our Sea” premiered at OkayPlayer/Africa and can be streamed here

Oceans Apart is the follow-up to Sun’s acclaimed sophomore LP Afriyie (2013) and is inspired by the “notion of belonging,” as well as Sun’s recent travels and experiences in Germany. The EP and accompanying film will be presented through several concerts, screenings and exhibits in Montreal, Germany, and Accra (see the full dates below).

Kae Sun is the musical project of Kwaku Darko-Mensah Jnr, an artist, with influences from afrobeat, folk, electronic and hip hop. Following his 2009 debut album Lion on a Leash which many called “genre-bending”, Kae Sun released the EP Outside the Barcode from which the track “Firefly Dance” was named Top Tune of the Day by KCRW in Los Angeles. Sun’s sophomore album Afriyie, funded by FACTOR, received critical acclaim from the likes of MTV Iggy, a hub for global music and trends who said of the record, “With Afriyie, Kae Sun has [emerged] as one of the most promising singer-songwriters on the international scene.” Elle Canada also featured the LP in their “Hit List” column describing Afriyie as “…pulsing and uplifting sophomore album… Afro Beats that [Kae] has blended seamlessly with the rap and soul music he listened to growing up.”

The album has achieved traction worldwide particularly in Asia, charting in S. Korea, Singapore and Taiwan and reaching over 2 million views on YouTube. Touring frequently throughout North America, highlights include Harlem’s Apollo Theatre, support for the Toronto stop of Janelle Monae’s Electric Lady Tour, and Yale University’s inaugural African arts and culture festival, AFRICA SALON, alongside FELA aKUsTIc (fronted by Sahr Ngaujah) and Angelique Kidjo.
