With the death of her mother, Hewan, a poster child for the successful, over-achieving immigrant, thought she was going to be able to finally bury her memories of her teenage years in Ethiopia. But the unexpected appearances of her estranged father and the man who had tortured her during the Red Terror campaign in the mid-1970s start unstitching her perfect quilt of a life.
The Revolution was thirty years ago, yet for a lot of Ethiopian immigrants it is today. Dead Weight tells a story of coming to terms with our stark reality as a people wounded. It is a tale that is everywhere yet spoken nowhere.

The screening will be folowed by a discussion with director Yemane Demissie as well as a small reception in the foyer.
