First Oshana Film Week from 17th to 21nd march in Northern Namibia
.
.
From 17 to 21 March 2017, AfricAvenir will host an Oshana Film Week in Oshakati, Ongwediva and Ondangwa in Northern Namibia. It is planned that this will become an annual event in the cultural calendar of the Oshana Region.
The Governor of the Oshana Region, Hon. Oshana Governor Clemens Kashuupulwa, will open the festival.
The opening film will be “The Train of Salt and Sugar” (Mozambique, 2016, directed by Licinio Azevedo). The Closing Evening falls on Namibia’s Independence Day 2017 and hence the post-colonial feature film “The Unseen” (Namibia, 2016) by Namibian director Perivi Katjavivi will close the festival.
Other films from across Africa planned to screen at the festival are “Noem My Skollie – Call Me Thief” (SA, 2016), “Crash” (Egypt, 2016, nominated for Best Foreign Oscar, 2017), “The President” (Cameroon, 2014), and “Vaya” (SA, 2016).
Mandume Centenary
Due to the centenary of Mandume being celebrated in 2017, we will host a special screening of “The Power Stone. The story of King Mandume and the Kwanyama Kingdom” (Namibia, 1999) during the film week.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker, a member of the Royal House and a historian. The panel will focus on the legacy of Manume and how filmmaking can play a role in heritage/preserving history.
Youth Involvement
Besides engaging local youth in arts and cultural education, and training young people in the field of curation, events organisation, management skills, and marketing, the filmweek will host a special youth focused event.
During the filmweek, local filmmakers Perivi Katjavivi and Andrew Botelle and film event organiser, promoter, distributor and curator Hans-Christian Mahnke will engage with local youth and educate them on the filmsector, Namibian film industry and give talks to interested youth on how to enter the film industry.
Background
After successfully running a monthly African Film Series called “African Perspectives” for more than ten years in the Namibian capital, AfricAvenir extended their regular events/screenings to Oshakati in 2016.
In February 2016 we held our first screening in Oshakati, opening the series with the African Premier of “The Unseen” (Namibia, 2016, directed by Perivi Katjavivi).
Since then we have held regular screenings at a public venue in Oshakati, realizing the need to spread access to other towns in the populous rich Oshana Region.
At one of our screenings in Oshakati, ELCIN Bishop Rev. Dr. Shekutaamba V.V. Nambala highlighted the need for more and concerted efforts to bring access to African cinema for Northern based audiences to stimulate and initiate debate on relevant African and global topics.
The Oshana Film Festival is our response to Bishop Rev. Dr. S.V.V. Nambala’s call.
