Workshop: New Impulses for Africa-Related Development Education

.

.

Dear Teachers, Activists and all interested in the topic,

We would like to invite you to participate in our workshop, which is a part of the Unframed Festival. The workshop will deal with the topic of Flight and Migration from African_Diasporic perspectives.

Together with Saliou Sarr, the filmmaker from Senegal, AfricAvenir International e.V. would like to offer you an overview of materials about flight and migration topic (films, dossiers, posters, etc.) for actors working in the field of education (teachers, educators, trainers, etc.). We would like to discuss with participants how these topics can be integrated into school lessons. Not only the current African_diasporic perspectives on flight and migration in the context of global inequality, but also future perspectives should be brought into our attention. The workshop aims to show how escape and migration between Africa and Europe can be examined without creating stereotypes in the classroom.

Saliou Sarr is a Senegalese filmmaker, musician, and artist. In 2017, he released his film "Life Saaraba Illegal" in collaboration with the Munich filmmaker Peter Heller. For almost a decade, the camera has accompanied Aladji and Souley, two brothers from a small fishing island in the Atlantic off the coast of Senegal, who are on their way to Europe or have already arrived there. It becomes clear that Aladji and Souley are migrants, not refugees. They do not leave their homeland because of war or dictatorship, but because they seek a better life. They rely on legal immigration and yet are trapped in the dichotomy. They are not allowed to stay because they haven’t received the Visa paperwork. However, they can not return back to Senegal, because their trip has consumed all of their finances and savings.
