DAKAR BIENNALE 2018
For the fourth time in a row AfricAvenir International e.V. organizes an educational and encounter trip to Dakar (Senegal) from the end of April till the beginning of May 2018. At the heart of the journey are the diverse exhibitions and performances of the 13th Dakar Art Biennale (Dak'Art), one of the most important art fairs in Africa, which takes place every two years. During the trip, the participants will be offered opportunities for interaction throughout the city, as well as meetings and discussions with Senegalese civil society groups, artists, activists and academics. Museum visits, city tours, day trips, concerts and much more are included in the program and not only provide a comprehensive insight into the current political-cultural negotiation of Senegalese society, but also in the historical context of the country.
The highlight of the trip this year is a three-day visit to Toubab Dialow - where a small paradise 55 km south of Dakar was created by the 92-year-old artist Gérard Chenet at the Espace Sobo Bade hotel. The Kunsthaus project has become a legendary meeting place for artists from all over the world, combining different arts and cultures, and is therefore the embodiment of our political philosophy at the heart of our educational journey to Dakar this year.
The travel project was created this year thanks to the impulse of Philip Kojo Metz, who also coordinates a cultural art project in Senegal with Gérard Chenet - multi-faceted artist from Haiti. Philip Kojo Metz is a conceptual artist who deals with issues of identity, history and relationships between contemporary cultures. He studied photography and visual arts and graduated as a master student with a diploma. (1994-1997 Academy of Photo Design, 1998-2005 Sculpture, Academy of Fine Arts).
