In the framework of the film series "Inspiring Young Imaginations – African Films for Children and Youth", AfricAvenir and FNCC this month proudly present the movie: Otelo Burning. Shot in Durban and somewhere between City of God and Blue Crush, Otelo Burning is a coming of age story set against the backdrop of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. The film tells the story of a group of township youngsters who discover the joy of surfing. Otelo Burning is a beautifully made, insightful and entertaining film that captures a turbulent time in the history of South Africa – all seen through a child’s eye.

Otelo Burning (2012) by Sara Blecher, South-Africa, 102 min, 13+, Zulu with English subtitles

16 year old Otelo, his good friend New Year and New Year's younger brother Ntwe leave their crowded home town to visit their friend Tau Modise. Tau's mother is a servant at a luxurious beach house, where the four friends quickly take to surfing. When Otelo proves to be a natural on the waves, Tau grows increasingly resentful of his new pal's impressive skills. Meanwhile, New Year's little sister Dezi develops a crush on Otelo that threatens to shatter the group's already fragile bond.

Otelo Burning was the opening film for the 32nd Durban International Film Festival and won 17 intenational awards, amongst others:

The African Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Child Actor and Best Cinematography; the Golden Owl Audience Award for Best Film at Cinerama BC Brazil; and the Best South African Film Award at the Cape Winelands Film Festival.
